With a background in social work, gardening was always a part of her life but not a living. After her first baby was born during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic she left her job with little vision for what would come next. Soil Studio began when a new neighbor approached her about starting a flower farm on her freshly tilled yard. Throughout her adulthood, she has gravitated towards work in sustainable agriculture and food sovereignty. Shorty before leaving her job as a social worker, Alaya hired Zoë to come to Lopez Island in the summer of 2020 to grow organic produce for the island’s school.
